Behind the seams of Issue 11

Preparation for this issue started way back in December 2015.  With this brief:

Search for Issue 11 contributors “Imagine this . . . You’re in the city on a bleak winters day. Everything is monochrome & dark – black, white, grey, navy. Then out of the corner of your eye you catch a flash of colour, a glimpse into a world of the imagination.  Is there a wild jungle, a world of vibrancy and fun around us?

Embrace unexpected fun details in this urban jungle inspired issue – pops of colour, punchy unexpected details, winter, urban secrets, beyond the everyday, i-spy, wild, jungle, animals, contrast hem, fun pockets, reversible features, costumes for everyday wear.”

These are the patterns we came up with after the final cut!

Hand-sewing “First Timers” Sew Along

I have a confession …

. . . I sew most of the samples for our photo shoots . . . BUT if its a hand sewing sample you can guarantee I haven’t sewn it!

I like the IDEA of hand sewing …

. . . Sewing you can do at netball practice

or while waiting for school pick-ups

or while watching Frozen for the 4 billionth time

or while you’re on holidays and away from your sewing machine, what’s not to love?!

But somewhere between recognising its a good idea and actually completing a project I chicken out!

Which brings me to this challenge . . .

Join us for a handsewing first timers sew along

Alicia from Felt with Love Designs hand sews the most amazing things! She’s offered to help me through sewing the Pretend Play Adventure Kit!

If you’ve been planning to give hand-sewing a go “someday”, or always wanted to complete the Pretend Play Adventure Kit but needed a little hand-holding I would absolutely LOVE to have you join me!  We can learn together!

If you’re a hand sewing aficionado who gets excited about mentoring newbies through their first hand sewing project, we’d love to have you along too!

How will it work?
1) Join the One Thimble Sewing Enthusiasts group on facebook.
2) Get your copy of the Pretend Play Adventure Kit as a stand alone here or in Issue 10 here.
3) Drop by the group each day to see which steps we’re doing, read Alicia’s extra tips/explanation for beginners, ask questions and share your WIP.  Search the #pretendplaysewalong

When is it?
Things will kick off “officially” on Thursday 21st April, but there’ll be some preparatory information tomorrow to help you with choosing and cutting your felt.

If you have any other questions please don’t hesitate to ask – either comment below or send me an email.  I’m a big fan of questions because they help me learn too!

Hope to see you there.

Happy Sewing

Styling the patterns of OT10 with Mel

Today on the blog we have Mel from Filles à Maman she’s sharing with us her tips and inspiration for styling the patterns from One Thimble!

See the french version of this post on Filles à Maman blog here: Capsule d’été avec One Thimble.

Planning has never been my strong point. Often I would have crush on a pattern and a fabric and create an extraordinary piece.  But the garment would rarely be worn because it didn’t fit with other pieces of the wardrobe or was an awkward match with other fabulous clothes. This happens less and less, thankfully. Now, projects are organized in CAPSULE.

Translation: “My mom is the best, or my mother do it better”

“I had a lot of fun creating outfits with One Thimble Magazine.”

Becca Duval is offering fabulous tool on her blog Free Notion. Tops, bottoms, shoes and layers are arranged in a Sudoku grid. At the end everything goes perfectly all together. It may seem a little intimidating the first time, but this is the 4th time I have used this tool and I love it.

You will notice that even though there are 2 beautiful dresses in issue 10, they are not shown here. The only reason is because they don’t need to be matched to other clothes. You will also notice that only girls are represented in this article, don’t forget that I am a mother of 3 girls 🙂. We can also do the exercise with patterns from a few past magazines to create a complete capsule for boys. In this edition, Enid Slouch Beanie, Willow Shirt and Playproof Dungarees are unisex. The Bonfire Jacket (Ainslee Fox) from the issue 5 complete the look perfectly. See suggestions on the site in boys section.

Mix and match:

I had made a beautiful headband in 2 colors. The girls “played” with it. It was a great treasure hunt that ended with … nothing. The headband is lost. It is almost certain that I will find it once the photo session has ended. It’s always like that! 🙂 Can you relate?

One Thimble Blog Capsule page 3

There is a tutorial to add zippered pockets on Jolie skirt on the blog “here“. My beautiful C so loved her top with the pineapple, she slept in it.

Business Spotlight – Fabric Fox

Today we’re starting a new blog feature – Business Spotlight!  I want to introduce you to some of the wonderful businesses who I shop with and who support One Thimble.  The first business up is Fabric Fox.

I brought the fabrics for my Mum and my neighbours Christmas gifts from Jacqui and used the Fold Over Clutch pattern by Little Moo Designs to make these.

Morning Walk Wispy Day Break Nimbus Fold Over Clutch Four Corners - Triangle in Black Fold Over Clutch

I’m so pleased with how they turned out and it was such a pleasure to shop with Fabric Fox.  So without further ado – let’s have a chat with the lady behind Fabric Fox – Jacqui.

Jade & Jacqui from Fabric Fox

Tell me a little about your business – when did you start? What prompted you to go into business?
Fabric Fox is an online Designer Fabric Store, we stock gorgeous quality designer fabrics from around the world, including wovens, knits and spandex.  The Fabric Fox website was launched in August 2014 after my husband put the idea in my head.   I’d always wanted to have my own little business for years but wasn’t sure what to do, I loved sewing and had a ‘little bit’ of a fabric addiction and my husbands said ‘why don’t you just give it a go’ so…l did.  We haven’t looked back, its great being able to work from home and still have time to do all the Mummy things with the kids.

What can people expect from Fabric Fox?
Excellent customer service and quality designer fabric at an affordable price.
I also aim to process & dispatched all orders promptly, most orders are posted the same day, if received before 12pm (that day), if not they are sent the following day.  Getting your fabric in your hot little hands as soon as possible 🙂

Tell me what you look for in the fabrics you stock?
So far l have been ordering fabrics that l would like to sew with and current trending fabrics.  I also love getting request for particular fabrics and trying to get them in, so if you are after something in particular contact me and l’ll see what l can do.

What coming ranges are you excited to stock?

Fabric Fox Stall Setup Do you craft/sew?
Yes l love to sew and would love to have more time for it.  I am self taught and brought my first sewing machine after my son (now 5) was born to make him some cot sheets.  It wasn’t until l has Miss 3 that l fell in love with sewing children’s clothes and my other little hobby business was created, Fox n Fillies. I used to sell the children’s clothes at local markets, its something l’d love to get back into some day soon!!

What’s something people might not know about you?
Oh l have a few things the first most exciting thing…we have baby no. 3 on the way, due in July!!  I can’t wait to start sewing some baby clothes & blankets soon.  Secondly before starting a family l was a Exercise Physiologist/Personal Trainer, so l guess you could say l have had a career change! I still love keeping fit & eating healthy but l’m really enjoying my new adventure, having my own little business, Fabric Fox.
