welcome To The One Thimble Blog
Today I’d like to introduce you to Kylie from Handbag Hardware Australia. I’ve shopped with HHA many times and Kylie has always been super helpful even when I wasn’t exactly sure what I was looking for! One of my favourite things about HHA is that Kylie stocks hardware “kits” for many handbag patterns (including those we’ve had in One Thimble). This means you can get all the hardware and interfacings etc from the one spot!
Back in January I was lucky enough to meet up with Kylie on our family holiday and she’s just as sweet, generous and helpful IRL!
Tell me a little about your business – when did you start?
I’ve been sewing since I was a girl and have always loved bags, however, the business didn’t start until 2011 when my (brief) role with St George Bank was made redundant. After being in the banking industry with various institutions for over 18 years, I decided it was time to take a chance at converting my passion for making bags, with Gypsy Boho Design, into a full time business doing custom orders. Handbag Hardware Australia started early 2012 from a need to find quality hardware. Having had a few hardware failures on my customers custom made bags I was determined to find top quality and from that HHA started.

The hard work is done for you, and the range of designers we kit for is growing monthly. We will also custom make a kit for you, especially useful if you’re a little unsure of what you need. Simply pop through an email request and we’ll get to work for you.
Tell me what you look for, when choosing the products you stock?
We are blessed (and worked very hard to find) a supplier who also manufactures for the top tier labels in Europe, so we know the styles we provide are on trend. Every product has been tested thoroughly for quality and all our items are double plated and lacquered so you know that they will last. We are passionate about supplying only the best and we check every item that leaves our door, it’s about being able to provide you with confidence to create.
Do you craft/sew?
Certainly do! I don’t have as much time now to make custom bags, however, I still can’t go a week without making something. Mainly it’s bags still on my cutting table but I do also love to make clothes and I’m looking forward to whipping up some winter gear very soon.
The custom bag side of the business, Gypsy Boho Design, has also just released a range of pdf bag patterns which I’m super excited about. The designs are proven winners when it comes to sew and sell, with the latest, The Post Office Tote, being one of my most requested custom bags. I hope that others have the same success with them.
What’s something people might not know about you?
I also have a bachelor of teaching (primary) which I obtain in 1993 (long time ago now!). When I left college I wasn’t able to locate out west where the roles were so I ended up in banking! I’m a firm believer that no learning is ever lost and I hope those years doing lesson plans has rubbed off in the clarity of Gypsy Boho Design PDF patterns.
